Online event: A discussion about the rise and future of women’s football in Scotland

Event Date:

Enlighten, Scotland’s independent, non-partisan think tank, is delighted to invite you to join a discussion about the rise and future of women’s football.

The women’s game, in Scotland as elsewhere, has grown rapidly in recent years, drawing in increased investment and sponsorship and larger crowds. There is greater participation at a youth and grass-roots level, and rising public interest in the leagues at the senior level, as well as in international football.

This is having a positive impact on the fitness and health of girls and young women, and on the quality of the football and players. But there is more to do. Revenues and salaries remain far behind those in the men’s game, and the leading clubs are outperformed and outspent by their international competition. How can this be tackled? What are the challenges and opportunities? What are the benefits to women and to Scotland as a whole?

Our panel will consist of:

Joelle Murray, coach and former captain of Hibs, who was capped 48 times by Scotland

Maree Todd, the Scottish Government’s Sports Minister

Professor Grant Jarvie, Chair and Director of the University of Edinburgh’s Academy of Sport

The discussion will be chaired by Chris Deerin, Director of Enlighten.

This event will be held via Zoom on Thursday 20 November starting at 10.00 am. Login details will be provided on RSVP to [email protected]
